Australian police investigate screaming and violent threats—but all they find is a man battling a spider

Police in suburban Sydney, Australia were prepared for a scene of domestic mayhem when they answered an emergency call this weekend. Neighbors had reported hearing a woman’s cries and a man yelling “I’m going to kill you,” along with the sound of furniture being thrown across the apartment.
When officers arrived, according to a post on the police department’s Facebook page, the man who answered the door said he was home alone.
When questioned, the police said, “the male became very sheepish.”
“It was a spider,” he said. “A really big one!”
What about the woman who was heard screaming, the police asked. The man said the high-pitched shrieks heard by neighbors were his own. “Yeah sorry that was me…I really really hate spiders.”

Free speech threatened? Senate says you may spend 2 years in jail for abusive tweets

Is this the end for freedom of speech on social media?
A bill seeking a two-year jail term or N4,000,000 fine- for any person who publishes any statement or petition in the newspaper against another person, institutions of government or any public office holder- passed through second reading in the Senate on Tuesday, December 1.
The bill also requested that anybody or group that sends any untrue text message or posts false messages on social media against another person, should be jailed for a term of 2 years after conviction by a court of law.
The bill, titled “A Bill for an Act to Prohibit Frivolous Petitions and other Matters Connected therewith” was sponsored by Senator Ibn Na’Allah ( APC) of Kebbi South .
The bill seeks to force petitioners to present sworn affidavits before laying petitions.
“Where any person in order to circumvent this law makes any allegation and or publish any statement, petition in any paper, radio, or any medium of whatever description, with malicious intent to discredit or set the public against any person or group of persons, institutions of government, he shall be guilty of an offence and upon conviction, shall be liable to an imprisonment term of two years or a fine of N4,000,000.00”,the bill stated.
On social media messages the bill stated: “Where any person through text message, tweets, WhatsApp or through any social media post any abusive statement knowing same to be false with intent to set the public against any person and group of persons, an institution of government or such other bodies established by law shall be guilty of an offence and upon conviction, shall be liable to an imprisonment for two years or a fine of N2,000,000.00 or both fine and imprisonment.”
The bill which seemingly tethers on the edge of abusing the fundamental human right to freedom of speech continues: “Not withstanding anything contained in any law, it shall be an unlawful to submit any petition, statement intended to report the conduct of any person for the purpose of an investigation, inquiry and or inquest without a duly sworn affidavit in the High Court of a state or the Federal High Court confirming the content to be true and correct and in accordance with the Oaths Act.
“Any petition and or complains not accompanied by a sworn affidavit shall be incompetent and shall not be used by any government institution, agency or bodies established by any law for the time being enforced in Nigeria.
“Any person who unlawfully uses, publish or cause to be published any petition, complaint not supported by a dully sworn affidavit shall be deemed to have committed an offence and upon conviction, shall be liable to an imprisonment for six months without an option of fine.
“Any person who acts, uses, or cause to be used any petition or complaints not accompanied by dully sworn affidavit shall be deemed to have committed an offence and upon conviction, shall be liable to an imprisonment for a term of two years or a fine of N200,000.00 or both, “ Citing the reason for sponsoring the bill Senator Na’Allah says: “Our past has portrayed us as a society where by mere expedience of writing a frivolous petition against public officials, you can have their right abused by taking certain measures that practically took away their right of presumptions of innocence only to be found later that the petition, as strong as it appears, on the paper actually lacks merit.”
“This sometimes, lead to a lot of innocent and most times honest civil servants being taken away from the public service only to be replaced by the dishonest ones, which invariably lead to the draining of the public service of civil servants with the desired integrity to move this country forward simply on grounds of principles.”
The Senator closed his soliciting for support with “The question to ask is, whether having passed the Freedom of Information Act which gives unfettered access by the public information from government offices they would be right for this government to continue to waste valuable time and resources in investigating frivolous petitions from the same public and I am sure you would find no difficulty in saying no to the ugly situation.”
It remains to see what would be made of the bill by the Senate.
Passing this bill would mean no more

Hours after the animal escaped from the wildlife park, it was killed by officials of the Operation Safe Haven.
Director of Press Affairs of Governor Simon Lalong, Emmanuel Nanle, confirmed the development, saying the lion was killed before it could harm anyone. Why Oshiomhole is after me – Okonjo-Iweala

Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the immediate former Minister of Finance, has called on the Federal Government to caution Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, over his recent attempt to link her to the alleged $2.1 billion arms procurement scandal.
Speaking on Wednesday, through Paul Nwabuikwu, her media adviser, the former Minister said she has absolutely nothing to do with the arms procurement issue.
Okonjo-Iweala said Oshiomhole is after her because she stopped him from ‘taking a highly suspicious N15 billion loan’, hence his resort to making false allegations against her.
“As recently confirmed by the Debt Management Office, professional analysis showed that Oshiomhole’s loan request which was based on using low interest World Bank loan to offset high interest commercial loans would have left Edo state with a heavy debt burden and the the state would have found it very difficult to pay back.”
She said the failure of Oshiomhole to get the loan is behind his ceaseless campaign of lies.
Okonjo-Iweala stated that she has briefed her lawyers and that she is ready to explore all legal means, local and international, to defend her name against corrupt and compromised persons.
“It has become a pattern of behavior that each time Dr. Ngozi OKonjo-Iweala is internationally recognized, Governor Oshiomole and his cohorts embark on a cynical and devious ploy of trying to pull her down locally.”
“Just last night, December 1st, Dr Okonjo-Iweala was honored at a high profile event attended by Vice President Joe Biden and former President Bill Clinton. Dr Okonjo Iweala was honored alongside Michael Bloomberg, Bill and Melinda Gates and Mo Ibrahim for their contributions to global development and humanity.
Gov Oshiomole and his cohorts should realize that their ill- motivated attempts to taint Dr Okonjo Iweala’s reputation will never succeed.”

Pistorius could return to jail with appeal ruling this week

South Africa's Oscar Pistorius will find out if he will return to jail when the Supreme Court of Appeal announces on Thursday if it will scale up the track star's conviction for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp from manslaughter to murder.
The Paralympic gold medallist was released on parole in October after serving a fifth of his five-year prison term for the "culpable homicide" of Steenkamp, whom he killed by firing four shots through a locked toilet door on Valentine's Day 2013.
Prosecutors said Pistorius, 29, should be convicted of murder and sent back to jail because he knew the person behind the door could be killed when he fired. A murder conviction would result in a minimum sentence of 15 years in prison.
"The judgment will be delivered at 09:45 (0745 GMT) on 3 December 2015 at the Supreme Court of Appeal," the court said in a statement on Tuesday.
Pistorius, whose lower legs were amputated when he was a baby, denied during his six-month trial that he deliberately killed Steenkamp, saying he mistook her for an intruder at his home.
High Court Judge Thokozile Masipa ruled last year that the state had failed to prove Pistorius had shown "intent" or "dolus eventualis," a legal concept that centers on a person being held responsible for the foreseeable consequences of their actions.
The state argued at the appeal that Masipa misinterpreted some parts of the law, including "dolus eventualis."
If the court of appeal overturns Masipa's verdict, she will be responsible for passing a new sentence on Pistorius, according to legal experts. (Reporting by Joe Brock; Editing by James Macharia and Mark Trevelyan)

Apple may be working on a 15-inch MacBook Air

The MacBook Air may receive a major face lift next year. According to Taiwan’s Economic Daily News, Apple is preparing to launch a redesign for its line of notebooks -- thinner than the models currently sold by the company.
Apple is expected to launch the new MacBook Air sometime in mid-2016. A likely venue for its announcement could be the annual Worldwide Developers Conference held by the company in June. The redesigned MacBook Air is anticipated to not only be thinner but sport a higher performance processor. The notebook may also come with a 13-inch display and a new 15-inch display option, up from the 11-inch and 13-inch models Apple has available in its store. But the company hasn’t decided whether to keep its 11-inch model, according to unnamed supply chain sources speaking to the Economic Daily News.
While Apple has released spec upgrades for its MacBook Airs on an annual basis, the line hasn’t seen a significant redesign since 2010. If the smallest MacBook Air were to be replaced, Apple’s 12-inch MacBook would be a likely candidate to serve as Apple’s ultraportable option. Not to mention Apple is also is promoting its 12.9-inch iPad Pro, which comes with a display that nearly matches the display on the 13-inch MacBook Air.
Despite faltering sales in the PC market so far in 2015, Apple has been one of the few companies that have managed to buck the trend and see positive shipments of 5.6 million Mac desktops and notebooks during the three month period ended September, up 1.5 percent from 5.5 million units last year, according to Gartner. Mac revenue during the holiday quarter is expected to come in at $7 billion, up from $6.9 billion last year, according to forecasts from FBR Capital Markets.
